The shortest, gentlest way into GHNP's core. If you only have a weekend, this is where you start.
Rolla is the easiest overnight trek into the Great Himalayan National Park, and it's where most first-time visitors take their first steps inside the core zone. The trail follows the Tirthan River the entire way, through forest that gets progressively wilder the further you walk.
It suits trekkers who want a real taste of the Park's wilderness without a demanding climb — the total ascent is a gentle 600m, and the trail rarely strays far from the sound of the river.
If two days feels too short once you're out there, Rolla connects directly onto the longer Chalocha and Shilt Hut routes without backtracking.
Nothing technical here — the path climbs and descends gently through forest, with no exposure or scrambling. A reasonable base fitness level (regular walking or light hiking) is all you need. This is the trek we point beginners toward.
Best time to go: April–June and October–November. Avoid July–August (monsoon); September can still mean tall wet grass on the trail.
The trek begins at Ropa village, a short drive from Gushaini. From here you follow the Tirthan River past the small village of Kauncha and gradually leave the last settlements behind.
About three hours in, you reach the GHNP entry gate — the last house before it belongs to the Park's last resident, who has chosen to stay. Just before the gate, a waterfall offers a good excuse for a break.
Past the gate you're inside the Park proper. Another 30–45 minutes of narrowing trail and thickening forest brings you to Rolla, your riverside campsite for the night.
A slow morning by the river before the descent — there's no need to rush, and lunch at Rolla before heading down is a good option if the weather holds.
The return follows the same trail back down to Ropa, where transport back to Gushaini is arranged.
Add a day and this becomes the Chalocha Trek — two hours deeper into the Park, with better birdwatching and a quieter campsite. Add two more and you're on the Shilt Hut & Rakhundi Top route.
