The best campsite view-to-effort ratio in the Park — a real Himalayan panorama in a single weekend.
Where Rolla gives you river and forest, Rangthar gives you altitude and open sky. The trek starts higher (from the road-connected village of Pekhri) and climbs to a meadow campsite at nearly 2,900m, with some of the widest mountain views available on any two-day trek in GHNP.
There's no river company on this one, and the climb — about 760m of ascent — asks a little more of your legs than Rolla does. In exchange, you get a genuinely spectacular place to sleep, and some of the clearest stargazing in the valley.
A bit more climbing than Rolla (760m vs. 500m ascent) but nothing technical — good mountain trail throughout. Suitable for a fit beginner.
Best time to go: April–June and October–November are best; July and September are workable with the right expectations.
A short jeep transfer from Gushaini gets you to Pekhri village, where the trek begins with a steep five-minute climb out of the village itself.
From there, a good trail leads to a water stream and then along a ridge toward Lakcha — a good spot for lunch before the village.
Past Lakcha, meet some of the villagers before a final hour through terraced fields and forest to the Rangthar campsite. Settle in with a hot drink, then watch the sunset and campfire under a genuinely dark sky.
A relaxed morning at altitude — no need to rush breakfast or the descent. Some groups add a fast hike up to Barchi Top before heading down.
The return follows the same trail back to Pekhri, where transport to Gushaini is waiting.
With a third day, continue from Rangthar to Barchi Top and back — a worthwhile add-on if the weather is holding.
