Why Try This Trek

Most GHNP treks are out-and-back routes within a single valley. Ookhal is different — it climbs from the Tirthan side, crosses a high meadow and ridge system, and descends into Sainj Valley, tracing the same watershed divide that separates the two river systems.

The meadow at Ookhal itself is a highlight in its own right: a wide, open thach (high pasture) used seasonally by shepherds, with sweeping views back toward the Marahni ridgeline.

Difficulty, Honestly

What to Expect Underfoot

A genuine multi-day mountain crossing — moderate throughout, with sustained daily walking rather than any single technical obstacle. Suits trekkers who've done at least one shorter GHNP trek before this one.

Best time to go: April–June and October–November, matching the wider GHNP trekking calendar.

Day by Day

Detailed Itinerary

Days 1–2 — Into the ecozone and up to the ridge

The approach shares its early stages with the Marahni route before branching toward the Ookhal meadow, gaining altitude steadily through forest and then open pasture.

Day 3 — Crossing to Sainj Valley

The trek's centrepiece: crossing the ridge itself, with views opening onto Sainj Valley for the first time as you descend the far side.

Days 4–5 — Descent through Sainj

A gradual descent through Sainj Valley's villages and forest back to a road-connected point, where transport is arranged.
