A quieter, less-frequented alternative to Rolla with the same gentle grade — and better birdwatching.
Chalocha sits about two hours deeper into the Park than Rolla, along the same riverside trail. It's less a separate trek than a natural extension for anyone with one extra day to spare.
The appeal here is solitude and birdlife — the campsite sees far fewer visitors than Rolla, and the riverbank draws species that come to drink, including the monal pheasant and, occasionally, the rare western tragopan.
Marginally longer than Rolla but no steeper — the extra distance is the only real difference. Still a good first multi-day trek.
Best time to go: April–June and October–November, matching Rolla's window.
Identical to Day 1 of the Rolla Trek: Ropa, past Kauncha, through the GHNP gate, to the Rolla campsite by the river.
After breakfast, continue deeper into the Park along the riverside trail. The forest thickens and the trail sees noticeably fewer people the further you go.
You can choose to camp at Chalocha itself, or keep your base at Rolla and treat Chalocha as a day hike — both work well depending on your group's pace.
A longer but still easy descent back through Rolla to Ropa and on to Gushaini — count on roughly five hours of walking.
